DSA WARNS OF EXPENSIVE UNOFFICIAL DRIVING TEST BOOKING SITES

The DSA has issued fresh warnings over unofficial driving test booking websites that charge exorbitant fees on top of the agency's own prices.

In most cases these booking services are not doing anything illegal, but the DSA is keen to point out that they are not connected to the DSA or the Government's Directgov website, which candidates use to make the bookings.

Some websites have been charging up to 65% over the standard fee. As well as warning learner drivers about the dangers involved in using unofficial test booking sites, the DSA is enforcing its trademarks and getting Trading Standards involved to make sure that websites are not able to mislead consumers.

The cost of a Car Theory Test in the UK is £31, and a Car Practical Test is £62 (£75 on Saturday).

REFRESHER DRIVING LESSONS

The vast majority of people pass their driving test when they are 17. However, most of them don't have the means to buy a car, insure it and keep it on the road, so they don't drive for a number of years by which time they have lost all confidence in their ability to drive.

Apologies to all. I'm not really up to speed with this blog business and consequently did not save it properly - so let's try again.

Over the years I have taken hundreds of novice pupils out and I have been amazed by how many don't actually realise that they will drive the car on their first lesson. At our driving school all pupils, no matter how nervous, will drive on their first lesson.

I feel that it is very important the pupils drive on their first lesson, after the initial disbelief that they are actually going to drive the car, they almost always instantly gain cofidence and as a result of this their desire and motivation to learn to drive increases significantly and they develop a very positive attitude towards learning to drive.

On the first lesson I introduce myself to the pupil and I then drive them to one of several nursery areas within Oxford. Throughout this short drive I encourage the student to observe how I handle the car, I also point out different road signs and markings etc., so that from the time they enter the car they are learning.

Having arrived in the nursery area I do a basic eye sight check and the pupil takes over the driver's seat. We then go through a 30 minute introduction to the controls of the car, after which the pupil is ready to move the car and off we go. This will probably be the most anxious time during the whole process for the pupil. However, we do have dual controls, so it is a perfectly safe environment. Normally after this the pupil is happy that they are driving, they are relaxed and looking forward to their next lesson.

This is my final day for blogging at Pat's Motoring School and I do feel a little nostalgic when I think about it. No more chatting about driving lessons in Oxford, no more promotion of Pat's gentle nature and skills, all in all it is a bit of a sad day.

If I had had Pat O'Sullivan as my driving instructor I think that things would have gone better for me during my first test.

I knew that I was in trouble from the moment that I got into the car because my palms were sweating so much that I had trouble holding on to the steering wheel! I think that the examiner noticed my perspiration and primed himself for what was going to happen next! And I was just so nervous that I didn't even think about chatting.

Not long into the test I came to a junction which was obscured by parked cars. After a couple of minutes the examiner told me to edge forward because I had caused a traffic queue and I just didn't know what to do. As I went forward my hands slipped on the steering wheel and the car lurched in the wrong direction! At this point I think that the examiner was going to get out because of my lack of skill, but he put his hands together, muttered quietly under his breath and we continued!

Knowing that there was little chance of recovery just exacerbated my sense of failure and nervousness! But things got worse when I had to reverse round a corner. At this point a friend of mine that I hadn't seen for a while spotted me, waved and came over. She banged on the window and I knew then that things were getting worse! I pointed out that I was taking my driving test, so she apologised, waved at the examiner and left! Needless to say I mounted the kerb as I reversed and she watched my manoeuvre with interest!

So I failed. And in all honesty I deserved to fail. Letting me loose on the road would have been fatal - literally! My driving instructor was good, but I never felt confident and this is where Pat O'Sullivan scores highly.

When did you last check your driving instructor's licence? I have been a driving instructor in Oxford for 10 years and have only been asked on one occasion to show my driving instructor's licence to a pupil.

Qualified driving instructors must display a green badge in their car at all times. This verifies that they are fully qualified and have passed all 3 parts of the driving instructors' exam. This exam is broken down into three parts. Part 1 - Theory - which is similar to the normal theory test but far more involved. Part 2 - Practical - Again similar to the normal practical test but to a far higher standard. Part 3 - Test of driving instructors' ability to teach and communicate effectively with pupils.

Having passed Part 2 trainee driving instructors are given a pink badge which allows them to teach unsupervised. Only 40% of trainee driving instructors pass Part 3 of the exam which obviously means that 60% of these PDIs (practicing driving instructors) will never qualify as driving instructors and yet they are allowed to teach.

In my opinion unsupervised tuition by PDIs is totally unacceptable. Let's be honest, would you get into a plane with a trainee pilot who was unsupervised? It's the same thing - your life is in their hands.
